about

I wrote "Boyfriend Box" over a year ago but this one took a long time to settle into a sound I was happy with. It is about the heartbreak and heavy reflection of having to dig out a sentimental box of trinkets and memories from past relationships in order to add items from a more recent breakup. I collaborated with producer Paramind on this one ("Still Friends" was our other collaboration), and it lives in a modern electronic pop realm.

lyrics

Designated box under the bed
Only open it when the most recent relationship has ended
Add his love letters and the photographs to the sentimental collection
of all the great guys who didn’t win me in the end

It’s just a couple of trinkets
Words in another’s handwriting
Do I leave it there to forget
or to preserve the meaning?
Open it with caution
Now that I am older, wiser
Still they feel like coffins
Lay another love to rest

Oh I loved him so and my parents know
They liked every guy that I brought home
And they love me always, me alone
Broken yet again back to square one
What to save and what to throw away
It’s like a lesson for future days

It’s just a couple of trinkets
Words in another’s handwriting
Do I leave it there to forget
or to preserve the meaning?
Open it with caution
Now that I am older, wiser
Still they feel like coffins
Lay another love to rest

Why did I make it so hard on my heart?
How can it not feel like another restart?
When will I find a love that is here to stay?
Maybe then I’ll throw the whole box away

Poems and letters
Words in familiar handwriting
Can I save all the meaning?
Is it only a box for grieving?

Open it with caution
Tell myself I’m older, wiser
Still they feel like coffins
All of my loves at rest

And maybe in the future
That’s when I’ll be older, wiser
Open it with pleasure
After all the pain has passed
